A balance between conservation and game breeding
Having grown up with a strong passion for the African bush and its wildlife, Poon and Lize Liebenberg started buying up a number of bush encroached cattle farms north of the Dwarsberg in 2001. From a small beginning, the total area now covers 6700ha. Two farms making up 5200ha are set aside purely for conservation. The farms Bloemhof and Stellenbosch are used for breeding disease-free African Buffalo, sable, black impala and golden wildebeest.
The large scale rehabilitation of the property commenced in 2003 with selective bush clearing of the heavily encroached farms, the removal of cattle farming infrastructure and cattle fences. Today we enjoy sightings of leopard, serval, caracal, brown and spotted hyena, blackbacked jackal, aardwolf, bat eared foxes and a large variety of birds of prey, including the endangered lappet faced vulture, species which sadly are often excluded from many modern intensive game breeding ranches.
The area is classified as Dwaalboom Thornveld and Dolomite Bushveld, with an average annual rainfall of 600mm. The topography is varied, with large flat areas as well as hills, valleys and rocky outcrops. This variation encourages the seasonal movement of game. A part of the property includes a 1,5km stretch of the beautiful Marico River.
Our Mission is to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of the fauna and flora that historically occurred in the area in an economically sustainable manner, with meaningful benefits to the local communities, in the form of jobs and training, as well as the education of children in the benefits of conservation. We have introduced and funded the Ecoschools initiative in schools in nearby villages. We will achieve our objectives by applying sound management principles and a passion and commitment to what we do.
In order to meet our conservation goals in a sustainable manner we breed various high value species. Our objective is to breed the most sought after animals of excellent genetics and health.
Poon an Lize Liebenberg welcome you to visit and view our conservation efforts as well as our excellent genetic stock of high value game species.
